The role of advanced waste-To-energy technologies in landfill mining

Publicado en: WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment, Volume 224, Issue 1, 20 September 2017, Pages 403-409Recently, the European Parliament has decided to include a specific reference to "Enhanced Landfill Mining" (ELFM) in the Landfill Directive proposing a regulatory framework for ELFM so as to permit the retrieval of secondary raw materials that are present in existing landfill sites. Recent studies are supporting ELFM since they consider that landfill mining would be economically feasible only if combined with energy recovery (i.e., waste-To-energy, WtE) and if a wide range of materials are recovered (i.e., waste-To-materials, WtM). In this study, a combined material (landfill mining) and energy (advanced WtE) recovery is proposed where the excavated waste (MSW refuse) can be directly recycled or pretreated and used in the production of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for an advanced (gasification-based) WtE plant producing power and heat. Both material and energy recovery are challenging in the circular economy since contributes to a loop-closing objective in human activities. An exhaustive assessment of each particular landfill site must be carried out in order to determine the profitability of the ELFM.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad ENE2012-31598Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades CTM2016-78089-RUniversidad de Sevilla Contrato de Acceso al Sistema Español de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación (VPPI-US

    Vascular co-option in brain metastasis.

Vascular co-option by brain metastasis-initiating cells has been demonstrated as a critical step in organ colonization. The physical interaction between the cancer cell and the endothelial cell is mediated by integrins and L1CAM and could be involved in aggressive growth but also latency and immune evasion. The key involvement of vascular co-option in brain metastasis has created an emerging field that aims to identify critical targets as well as effective inhibitors with the goal of preventing brain metastases.Research in the Brain Metastasis Group is supported by MINECO-Retos SAF2017-89643-R (M.V.), Bristol-Myers Squibb-Melanoma Research Alliance Young Investigator Award (498103) (M.V.), Beug Foundation's Prize for Metastasis Research (M.V.), Fundacion Ramon Areces (CIVP19S8163) (M. Relación de la competencia motriz percibida con la práctica físico-deportiva

The aim of this research study is to determine the relationship between an individuals perceived motor competence and their tendency to play sport or do physical activities. For the purpose of the study, one-to-one relationships were established between a perceived level of competence and sociodemographic variables (age, gender, a certain level of education), the amount of sport/physical activity a person did, the time devoted to the latter, whether the sport/activity las done as a team or individually, and whether the individuals did these activities under the organization of a federation or on their own. The sample group consisted of 1,111 individuals of ages ranging from 15 to 64. Data was compiled by means of a specially designed analytical questionnaire on sports and physical activities. After conducting several analyses to test the independence of the variables, using Pearsons c2 test complemented with residual analyses among others, the conclusions that were obtained suggest that young people and males have a higher perception of their motor competence and that this perception worsens progressively as people age. There is a direct link between how people perceive their motor competence and the amount of sport/physical activity they do. This is higher when the participants are the members of a federation and when people do team sports or group physical activities

Questions about the cultural identity of Andalusia

    Get PDF
Is there an Andalusian culture? What there is is a particular history that forms an "identity" that provided unique profiles of Andalusian society. This identity has been frequently described in a distorted and pejorative way, for example in "Theory of Andalusia", by José Ortega Gasset. Certainly, there is a conscience and feeling of being Andalusian. However, the anthropological explanation of the cultural identity is a problematic matter that tends to lose sight of the importance of wider cultural contexts, and finally our shared human culture and identity.Grupo de Investigación Antropología y Filosofía (SEJ-126). Approaches to the origin and the evolution of religious systems

The goal is to provide a better understanding of how religious systems emerge and evolve in relation to the respective cultural systems to which they belong. This article outlines an analysis of religious behaviour as a system, in order to demonstrate that its structure and function respond to changing historical circumstances, resulting in a succession of historical paradigms. At the same time, both the formation and the transformation of religion is found to be mediated by specific mechanisms of the human mind, the same in all the great traditions. The case of early Christianity is considered. Finally, the question arises concerning the necessary adaptation of religion in a world marked by modernity, globalization and secularism.- Grupo de investigación Antropología y Filosofía (SEJ-126). Evolution of cultural diversity in the information global society

The technological revolution, founded in new information technologies, has unleashed a globalization process in multiple dimensions. A global society is arising, a new model of civilization before which traditional cultures feel in danger of extinction. Is this fear rational? A quick survey of the presence of cultural diversity on the web serves to deny the presumed homogenization of globalization and the radical positions against it. The global society offers a plurality of faces; it constitutes an ambivalent reality, at the same time destructive and creative, filled with contradictions but generating great opportunity for outlying and minority cultures. Our outlook for the future depends in good measure on our ability to integrate the peculurarities in the growing global system, without confining ourselves to particular ethnicities or national identites, and without making globalization, which should be pluralistic, a faceless abstraction.Grupo de Investigación Antropología y Filosofía (SEJ-126).
